Die Naming Nomenclature

Patriotic Die Numbers: Die numbers 1 through 537 refer to those numbers assigned and described by PatV5. Note that this reference does not use all of the numbers between 1 and 537. Over the years dies have been deleted from the series when they were found to be non-contemporary or a late die state of another listed die. In addition some dies have been added. These have been positioned near like-topic dies and capital letter suffix applied (e.g. 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, 7A, 188A, etc.)

Storecard Reverse Die Numbers: Die numbers 1000 through 1429 refer to those numbers assigned and described by SC75. As in the Patriotic series, some die numbers have been deleted and others added (e.g. 1100, 1104 etc. are unassigned; 1183A, 1417A etc. were added).

Storecard Obverse Die Designators: Because SC75 does not assign any identifiers to storecard obverse dies, but embeds them in the listing text, it became necessary to create a system to refer to these dies. They are referred to by the Fuld number of their first use. When a merchant had multiple obverse dies, the subsequent obverse dies have the variety number of the die’s first use appended. In the case an unnumbered reverse die, a lower case r is appended to distinguish it from the obverse die. Some examples should make this understandable:

IN630A        Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-1a and IN 630A-2a

IN630A3      Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-3a

IN630A4      Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-4a&b, 5a&b

IN630A6      Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-6a&b, 7a, 8b, and 9a

IN630A10    Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-10a&b, 11a, and 12a&b

IN630A13    Designates the obverse die used on IN 630A-13a&b

MI225CH     Designates the obverse die used on MI 225CH-1a & b

MI225CHr    Designates the reverse die used on MI 225CH-1a & b

OH165CY42r  Designates the reverse die used on OH 165CY-42a & b

OH165CY43r  Designates the reverse die used on OH 165CY-43a & b

Sutler Token Die Designators: Sut83 also does not have a die naming convention, so a process similar to that used for SC75 is followed.

  IL-I5B    Designates the obverse die for J.C. Benton’s card IL I5B, I5L, I10C, & I25L

Die Number / Name priority: Some dies have a name under two or more of these naming systems. Preference is given to referring to a die by its Fuld die number.

  1. Where space permits and a die has both a Fuld Patriotic and a Fuld Storecard number, both are listed, with the Patriotic number listed first. Where space is tight, whichever number represents the more common use of the die is used (e.g. 38A-1123 is listed as the die name where space permits, where there is insufficient room in the text,1123 is used in preference to 38A as the die is common as a storecard but rare as a patriotic).

  2. Some die photos embedded in the text of SC75 do not have Storecard die numbers but have a Patriotic die number. These are referred to by their Fuld Patriotic number. For instance, SC75 pg. 556 pictures a die whose die designator would otherwise be WI510AGr. However, the die is listed in the Patriotic volume as die 469B, and is referred to as such on this site.
